Mass
I have been fascinated by the idea of the empty Vatican, for a long time. I imagine what the Pope could say when, looking out his window, or inside the Basilica, he finds no one. I like to imagine him while exclaiming, "Oh, where the fuck is everybody?" My atheism makes me enjoy these daydreams. The images of empty Saint Peter Church instead convey me a non-sarcastic pleasure. Faith returns, inside everyone’s home, something private (but on state TV, as always). The non spectacularization through the public, finally inexistent, makes everything more official. Perhaps it is no coincidence that in English "mass" (crowd) and "mass" (religious function) find the same translation.
